NFRC’S RISA GARON ON THE HUFFINGTON POST
Co-founder and Executive Director of NFRC, Risa Garon, writes frequently for The Huffington Post, offering advice, reflecting on client situations, and guiding parents through family transitions. In her most recent article, “Loneliness: The Sound of Silence,” Risa expounds upon the idea that children experience loneliness throughout and after the separation or divorce process.
…What I learned from these honest individuals was that they experienced a profound loss. Not being with one parent, they often, as Mia put it, experienced that loss by themselves because the parent they were with didn’t necessarily feel the same way. The emotional separation takes away both of the parents and leaves the child incredibly lonely.”
Risa goes on to suggest some very specific coping strategies which parents can implement to lessen or avoid this “loneliness” and to normalize what their children are going through.
