The first two seminars help parents understand the developmental needs of children, how grief impacts decision-making, and the importance of parents working together in the best interest of their children. The facilitators educate parents about the effects of a family transition on parents and children and provide parents with an opportunity to learn co-parenting communication skills. An attorney presents a brief overview of the legal process. Parents have an opportunity to hear directly from youth and parents, either through video or live presentations, who have experienced a family transition.
The third seminar expands on the concepts introduced in the first two seminars by helping parents prepare a written parent plan that focuses on addressing the needs of their children. Parents are encouraged to discuss and agree upon the most important parts of parenting time and parenting responsibilities. Writing a parent plan helps parents communicate with each other. The impact can be significant, affecting both the parents and their children in many positive and constructive ways. Parents can bring the parent plan to their mediator, attorney, co-parenting counselor, as well as the court.
